Battalion History Updates

1975-77

I served in B CO. 79th 1st platoon when the transition was made from const. to combat hvy. From Jan 1975 to July 1977. I was an ASA retread turned 51B, there were 3 of us in B company who were. With the drug problem B CO. had I wonder how many are still alive today from that era.

1978

Was in D-Co./Eartmoving Platoon/62Echo-Road Grader thru 1978. Remember trying to detrack tanks and annoying the hell out of the treadheads with tank ditches in Manheim and then mud running with the Company's crane, deuce and jeep. Remember trying to "tip" the porta-potty and going on Wolfbrau beer runs?!!!! How about "dumping" Arkansas out of the belly of his Cat290?!!! Can't forget Fergy and Flat! We were the first earthmoving platoon to call a stike... the notorious "fence project"!!! Bail out the back of the duece at a traffic light to hit the fishbar... the look on those locals faces that were in line behind us!!! OHHHH the memories!!! It was great!!! Thanks guys!!! Sorry I had to leave early!!!

1979-1980

About the only thing that I can add to your  "Unit History"  Is when I was assigned to the 79th when it was stationed in Karlsruhe Germany on (I think the name was) Smiley Barracks from 1979 to 1980. At that time Lt. Col. Robert Hatch was the Battalion Commander.and while I was with them I was involved in two projects.

The first one was an Equestrian complex located about 10 miles from the Kaserne.

The second project was the building of a storage or maintenance building adjacent to the back gate at Ramstein Air Force Base. This project was going on at the same time the burn victims from the aborted rescue attempt in Iran were flown to Ramstein and taken to the hospital at Landstul.

These two projects occured just prior to the unit being commited to the Graf tank ranges upgrades for the incoming M-1 Abrahms tanks.

I'm sorry that I cannot give you any further information. I don't think you'd be interested in knowing about the time Charlie Company's barracks got infested with crabs...........

I was a SP4 in HHC from June 1982 until August 1983. I was one of the courier drivers from Karlsruhe to Graf during the range 99 upgrade for the M-1 Abrahms Tank.

1993 - Deactivation

I was in the 79th when they disbanded, and everyone went to the 94th in 1993. HSC and Charlie were re-deployed to Vilseck (I HATED Vilseck!), Alpha went to Hohenfels (I was assigned as one of Alpha's medics for 6 months, Loved it in Hohenfels, but then again, I spent every possible amount of time in Nuremberg, not Hohenfels), and Bravo went to Wildflicken. I have a bunch of pictures from Karlsruhe and from Hohenfels and Vilseck, if you guys want to copy them.
